Award-Winning Author Eddie Price Presents: Christmas in the American Colonies
đź“… Thursday, December 4th
đź• 5:30 PM
📍 Perry County Public Library
Step back in time with local award-winning author Eddie Price as he shares how Christmas was celebrated in Colonial America—a far cry from today’s bright lights, decorated trees, and gift-filled stockings.
You’ll discover how European immigrants brought diverse traditions and beliefs, shaping holiday customs across the colonies:
-
New England Colonies: Puritans forbade Christmas celebrations—those caught showing holiday spirit could be fined five shillings.
-
Middle Colonies: Quakers treated it as an ordinary day, Presbyterians were hesitant, but Dutch and German settlers brought lively customs like baking, “Christmas pyramids,” and Saint Nicholas.
-
Southern Colonies: Feasts, dancing, hunting, visiting, church services, and decorations of holly, ivy, and mistletoe brought warmth to the winter season.
The program will also offer a peek into George Washington’s Mount Vernon Christmas, featuring diary entries and even the President’s gift list.
Perfect for history lovers, schools, historical societies, and holiday gatherings—this presentation brings the spirit (and sometimes the lack of it) of colonial Christmas to life!
